Frequently Asked Questions (Please click each question to open the answer)

1. What is the difference between the eRL-BE365 deadbolt Lock and the eRL-FE595 latchbolt Lock?

Deadbolt:A lock component having an end which protrudes from or is withdrawn into, the lock front by action of the lock mechanism. When the door is closed and the deadbolt thrown, it extends into a hole provided in the strike thus locking the door. It does not retract with end pressure.

Latchbolt: A lock component having a beveled end which projects from the lock front in an extended position, but may be forced back into the lock case by end pressure or drawn back by action of the lock mechanism. When the door is closed, the latchbolt projects into a hole provided in the strike thus holding the door in a closed position.

The latchbolt eRL Lock can automatically lock the door when the door is closed, but the deadbolt eRL Lock can’t. For the deadbolt eRL Lock, each time you have to press the big button on the keypad and manually turn the knob to lock the door.

Please watch the following video to learn how to correctly install the latchbolt to increase the security of the latchbolt lock.

2. What’s ANSI/BHMA Grading System and what does this mean to you?

ANSI/ BHMA (Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association) Grading System is accredited by the America National Standards Institute (ANSI), a private non-profit organization that administers and coordinates the standardization to develop and maintain performance standards for builder's hardware. These standards have cycle, functional strength, security, dimension and finish requirements. If the products meet the standards, when tested by a nationally recognized testing laboratory the product may be listed in the “Directory of Certified Products,” a directory published by BHMA. ANSI/BHMA standards set forth different product grades for door hardware products. These product grades are defined by progressive levels of performance benchmarks in each applicable standard. The purpose of each grade is to help identify the quality, security, and durability of locksets through a series of operational and security tests.
The grade means to you:

  • Grade 3 Good: Residential Security.
  • Grade 2 Better: Light Commercial and Heavy Residential (This is the eRL Locks' grade).
  • Grade 1 Best: Heavy Commercial Use.

3. What is the eRL System composed of?

The eRL system is composed of two parts. One is the eRL Lock, the electronic keypad lock installed on the door of your property. The other is the eRL Remote Access Controller, a Code Generation Program running on your own computer or Online Management Website to remotely manage the eRL Locks.

4. Why is the eRL system a better way to manage your vacation & airbnb rental property?

  • You no longer have to worry about having to physically exchange key with guests and they no longer have to worry about losing key on vacation.
  • You have control over your rental property no matter how far it is as you can conveniently control check-in/out times and generate Access Codes in the comfort of your own home/office. Your guests are able to receive Access Codes virtually by email or phone, which is more convenient for both of you.
  • The eRL system enables you to have more control over your property than a using regular keypad lock or keybox. Since all Access Codes are time-sensitive, you can rest assured that guests will not be able to enter your property outside the designated times you’ve set for them. These Access Codes are also flexible in meeting the needs of all guests and personnel.
  • The eRL Remote Access Controller allows you to keep track of all Access Codes used by your guests and personnel for security reasons.

5. Does the eRL system require the use of any wireless network or Internet connection to control access?

No. The functioning of the eRL Lock and the eRL Remote Access Controller does not require the use of wireless networks or Internet connections. The eRL Remote Access Controller uses the latest encryption/decryption technology to control property access which works like this:

  • the eRL Remote Access Controller automatically encrypts the check-in/check-out time schedule you set for your guests and generates a 10-digit Access Code.
  • you are than able to easily email, fax, or phone your guests to give them their Access Code.
  • Upon arrival to your property, your guests will enter the Access Code into the eRL Lock and its microprocessor will automatically decrypt the Access Code to get their check-in/out time schedule you preset. After this, the eRL Lock checks with its Real Time Clock to determine whether to unlock or not.
  • Your guests will than be able to create easy-to-remember 3-6 digit Personalized Code and start enjoying their vacation! The Access Code and the Personalized Code will automatically become invalid in accordance to their designated check-out time when their stay is over.

6. Does the eRL system charge monthly fees?

No. The eRL system is a one-time purchase. Your purchase comes with the PC version of the eRL Remote Access Controller software that only takes seconds to install on your own computer. You are than able to generate Access Codes no matter where you are. Laptops, smart phones, or tablets or other Internet enabled devices can also be used for code generation through accessing the Online Management Site, which is also free to use.

7. Does the use of the eRL system require any computer expertise?

Absolutely not. This eRL Remote Access Controller requires very little computer knowledge to use. While the PC version of the program only runs on the Windows Operation System, the Web version works on any operating system such as MAC OS. This program is very straightforward and simple to use.

8. In the event that my computer breaks down, will my database be lost?

No. The PC version of the program comes with a database backup/restore function that creates a backup file if you periodically backup your database. Therefore, you will be able to recover all data even after your computer breaks down. If you chose to use the Online Management Website, we will periodically backup your database for you to prevent any data loss.

9. Can I control access to my vacation & airbnb rental property from anywhere in the world?

Yes. 11. What if my guests find the 10-digit Access Code hard to remember?

Guests are able to create their own Personalized Code to replace the 10-digit Access Code originally given to them. Upon successfully unlocking the door after entering their 10-digit Access Code, they can immediately create an easy-to-remember 3-6 digit Personalized Code, which they can use for the remainder of their stay.

12. How many Personalized Codes can be used in total?

Each 10-digit Access Code can be replaced by one 3-6 digit Personalized Code. Every time a new Personalized Code is created, the old Personalized Code for that Access Code will be deleted automatically. The eRL Lock allows for a total of 40 different Personalized Codes to replace 40 different original Access Codes at a time. Upon expiration, the Personalized Code will be automatically deleted along with the original 10-digit Access Code to make room for a new Personalized Code to be made by the next guest/personnel. This way, you’ll never have to worry about running out of memory space for Personalized Code creations. The disabled Personalized Code can also be reused by a new guest or personnel one day after the original Access Code has expired.

13. Can one user’s Personalized Code be the exact same as another’s Personalized Code?

No. If a user tries to create a Personalized Code that is the same as other user’s, the eRL Lock will automatically reject this Personalized Code by playing a visible and audible warning (red light flashes) which signals that they need to create a different Personalized Code.

14. Can I use the eRL system to manage my property if it is up for long-term rental/residency?

Yes, you are able to manage properties up for long-term rental in addition to short-term rentals. You are able to control the time validity for up to 2 years for guest Access Codes, which is especially suitable for long-term rental needs. Here are some advantages of using the eRL system to manage your long-term rentals:

  • New tenants don’t need to worry about security issues associated with previous tenants whom might still have keys that could access their rental property.
  • You won’t have to go through the hassle of physically going back to your property and resetting a new code for every new tenant that rents your property.
  • This system saves you the stress of constantly having to remind your tenants to pay their monthly rent. Tenants will be required to pay their entire rent fee beforehand in order to receive an Access Code for their desired length of stay. Once their time is up, tenants will no longer be allowed into the property. Therefore, the eRL Lock will serve as a reminder for your tenants to pay additional rent if they wish to stay longer.

15. How can I disable a valid Access Code which is for an early checked out guest or quitted housekeeper?

This is easily done. All you need to do is to run the eRL Remote Access Controller program and look under the category “History Code” to find out your guest/housekeeper’s Access Code.

  • On site to disable it yourself by Master Code – Entering keypad command as “6-digit Master Code [SCHLAGE] 2 [SCHLAGE] the 10-digit Access Code you want to be disabled
  • Remotely disable it by a valid Access Code (ask your new guest/housekeeper to do it) – Entering keypad command as “10-digit valid Access Code [SCHLAGE] the 10-digit Access Code you want to be disabled”.

After doing this, your guest/housekeeper’s Access Code and Personalized Code will forever be invalid.

16. Is it possible for someone to guess an Access Code or Personalized Code and enter my property?

This is near impossible because the 10-digit Access Code is generated from a total of 10 billion possible combinations, and the 3-6 digit Personalized Codes be created from over 1 million combinations. This makes guessing an Access Code or Personalized Code extremely difficult. Furthermore, a security feature that the eRL Lock has is the “Inactive State” feature. The eRL Lock will automatically go into an inactive state for 30 seconds after 3 wrong code tries. After the 30 seconds, the next wrong code try will prompt the eRL Lock to enter a 30 second inactive state again.

17. How does the eRL System adjust to Daylight Saving Time?

When you are initially setting the date/time for your eRL Lock, you must always set it up in standard time and NOT Daylight Saving Time! When you generate an Access Code, the eRL Remote Access Controller will automatically adjust to Daylight Saving Time for that eRL Lock based on your rental property’s geographical time zone. This means you no longer need to go back and forth to your rental properties to adjust to Daylight Saving Time for the eRL Lock or worry about guests not entering your property if Daylight Saving Time happens to be in effect upon their arrival.

18. I see the simple keypad locks on the market at lower price, what are the advantages of using the eRL system?

The eRL system is developed especially for the remote management of rental properties.

  • Even though using a simple keypad to create Access Codes by hand sounds simple at first, it is not optimal for controlling multiple properties as it will be too difficult keep track of multiple Access Codes manually. The eRL system makes it easy for you to organize and keep track of Access Codes with the click of a few virtual buttons.
  • The eRL system’s main goal is to provide you with the easiest way to generate and track Access Codes in the comfort of your own home or office. This means that no matter how far away you are from the rental property, you are still able to effectively control and manage access to your property. With a simple keypad lock, you are not able to do this, as you must always be physically present to set all Access Codes by the keypad.
  • Another one of the eRL system’s goals is to give you greater control over check-in/check-out times for your guests accessing your property, which increases security. Using a simple keypad lock is very limiting and creates many security risks as the Access Codes you set in the lock can last forever, therefore preventing you from controlling check-in/check-out times for guests or work times for personnel.

19. Does the eRL Lock require a professional to set up using special tool?

Absolutely not. The eRL Lock is a do-it-yourself product that can easily be set up without the help of a professional, a special PDA, or any other device. It's as easy as 1-2-3 to set up:

1). Register your eRL Lock with the eRL Remote Access controller.
2). Set the Master Code for the eRL Lock - After registering your eRL Lock with the eRL Remote Access controller, the eRL Remote Access Controller will randomly generate a unique 6-digit private Master Code for the eRL Lock. You will than need to set the Master Code into the eRL Lock as following keypad command:
"Enter the old 6-digit private Master Code [SCHLAGE] 0 [SCHLAGE] enter the new private Master Code [SCHLAGE] re-enter the new private Master Code".
3). Set the date and time for the eRL Lock as following keypad command:
"Enter your new private Master Code [SCHLAGE] 1 [SCHLAGE] enter the Year, Month, Day, Hour, and Minute in YY-MM-DD-HH-MM format".
You are all done! Your eRL Lock is ready to go.

20. I get a call to book my vacation or airbnb rental property, how can I check my rental property availability online?

The eRL system is not only a remote access control system, but also a rental management system. This task is easy because the eRL Remote Access Controller can keep track of every Access Code’s specific date/time information in real time. All you need to do is to click “Code Generation”, select your rental property address and the eRL Lock name, then click “Checked Reserved”. You are than able to view all reservations for that property and immediately get back to your guests on whether they are able to book or not.

21. What should I do if my guests forget their given Access Code and can't enter the property upon arrival?

This is simple. Since the eRL Remote Access Controller keeps track of all generated Access Codes in its database, all you need to do is to click “History Codes” in the program to find your guest’s Access Code and quickly remind them again by phone or email.

22. How many unlock/lock events can be recorded by my eRL Lock, and how to view the event records in my eRL Lock?

The eRL Lock retains the last 1,000 unlock/lock events. The Audit Trail feature allows you to know WHO used WHICH Access Code at WHAT date/time accessed your property. Thus, you will be able to check if housekeeper or maintenance people actually showed up to do their task at their designated times.
To get the Audit Trail from your eRL Lock, you need to have the ATR-11 Audit Trail Reader:
1). Connect the Audit Trail Reader with your eRL Lock and enter the download keypad command to retrieve the latest 1,000 Audit Trail records, which will be transferred from your eRL Lock to the Audit Trail Reader.
2). Plug the Audit Trail Reader into your computer USB port and run the 2-in-1 PC/Web version of the eRL Remote Access Controller to view or print out Audit Trail records.

23. My property has two doors. If I install 2 eRL Locks, can I use just one Access Code to unlock both eRL Locks?

Yes, it’s very easy for you to do that. You will only be required to register one eRL Lock with the eRL Remote Access Controller program. You will need to set the same 6-digit Master Code as generated by the eRL Remote Access Controller for both eRL Locks. Afterwards, any Access Code generated by the eRL Remote Access Controller can be used to unlock both eRL Locks.

24. What are convenient features the eRL system supports for multiple property managements?

  • Group Access Codes - the eRL Remote Access Controller programs enable you to generate a single group Access Code that can be used to access all properties classified in the same group. This means that instead of undergoing the painstaking process of generating a bunch of Access Codes for each personnel, each personnel can be given one group Access Code for more convenient to access multiple properties during the times that is allowed. For example, the housekeeper is given one group Access Code to access all properties in that group for cleaning purpose, and the maintenance person is given another group Access Code to access all properties in that group for maintaining purposes.
  • Use of multiple control program accounts - this operates at three different privilege levels:
  • Level 1: full access to every function in the eRL Remote Access Controller program. This means the ability to do everything in the eRL Remote Access Controller program.
Level 2: can only generate Access Codes in the eRL Remote Access Controller program.
Level 3: can only view generated Access Codes in the eRL Remote Access Controller program.
  • Generated By” feature - allows you to trace WHO generated WHICH Access Code at WHAT time. This feature further increases security for your properties.
  • PC version and Web version eRL Remote Access Controller API - Easy to be integrated with any PMS system to generate Access Codes automatically.

25. What is the eRL Lock battery life, and how can I replace the eRL Lock battery?

The eRL Lock uses one 9V alkaline battery, which is commonly available at any store. One battery can last up to 3 years. After replacing a new battery, you do not need to re-program anything for the eRL Lock if your old battery wasn't entirely drained or disconnected for more than 24 hours. If your old battery was entirely drained or disconnected for more than 24 hours, you will need to re-program the date and time for the eRL Lock.

26. There are some similar systems to the eRL system. Why should I choose the eRL system over other similar systems?

Compare with other similar systems, the eRL system has the following advantages.
1). The eRL Locks are ANSI/BHMA certified, which mean that they come with a lifetime guarantee in mechanical and finish, and are made to the highest of quality to withstand tough weather conditions such as salt air environment that most seaside rental properties are situated near.
2). The eRL Locks have a backlight keypad, which makes it easier to use under dark lighting. The keypad is also designed to withstand wear over time.
3). The PC/Web/Mobile version eRL Remote Access Controller programs are absolutely free to use. Unlike some other systems that charge monthly or service fees, the eRL system is a one-time purchase.
4). The eRL system can adjust Daylight Saving Time automatically, which saves you the hassle of constantly having to convert between different time zones and having to physically go to your property to manually adjust Daylight Saving Time.
5). The eRL Lock battery can last up to 3 years.
6). The eRL system allows you to easily disable an issued Access Code that is still valid. This is especially useful in cases for staff that resigns before their employment contract is up and still has access to your property. This allows you to have more control over who is allowed to enter your property.
7). The eRL system supports the Audit Trail feature at the lowest price guaranteed. It also comes with the free 2-in-1 PC version and Web version eRL Remote Access Controller programs which are used not only to generate and manage all Access Codes, but also to view and print the Audit Trail Records.
