Frequently Asked Questions

1. eRL System & Products

No. The eRL System does not require the use of wireless network or Internet connection. It uses the latest encryption/decryption technology to remotely control property access, which works like this:

  1. the eRL Code Generation Program automatically encrypts the check-in/check-out time schedule you set for your guests and generates a 10-digit Access Code.
  2. You then email, fax, or phone your guests to give them their Access Code.
  3. Upon arrival to your property, your guests will enter the Access Code into the eRL Smart Lock, and its microprocessor will automatically decrypt the Access Code to get their check-in/out time schedule you preset. After this, the eRL Smart Lock checks with its built-in Real Time Clock to determine whether to unlock.
  4. Your guests will then be able to create an easy-to-remember, 3-6 digit Personalized Code, and start enjoying their vacation! The Access Code and the Personalized Code will automatically become invalid in accordance to their designated check-out time when their stay is over.

The eRL Smart Lock System is composed of two parts. One is the eRL Smart Lock, the electronic keypad lock installed on the door of your property. The other is the eRL Code Generation Program (runs on your PC or browser), which remotely controls your eRL Smart Locks.

  • KEYLESS: You no longer have to worry about having to physically exchange a key with guests, and they no longer have to worry about losing key on vacation.
  • REMOTENESS: You have control over your rental property no matter how far it is, as you can control check-in/out times by generating Access Codes remotely, in the comfort of your own home/office. Your guests are able to receive Access Codes virtually by email or phone, which is more convenient for both of you.
  • SECURITY: The eRL Smart Lock System enables you to have more control over your property than a using regular keypad lock or key box. Since all Access Codes are time-sensitive, you can rest assured that guests will not be able to enter your property outside the designated times you’ve set for them. These Access Codes are also flexible in meeting the needs of all guests and personnel.
  • EASY MANAGEMENT: The eRL Code Generation Program allows you to keep track of all Access Codes used by your guests and personnel for security reasons.

The eRL Smart Lock System is specifically designed for remote management of rental properties.

  • Even though using a simple keypad to create Access Codes by hand sounds convenient at first, it is not optimal for controlling multiple properties as it will be too difficult keep track of multiple Access Codes manually. The eRL Smart Lock System makes it easy for you to organize and keep track of Access Codes with the click of a few virtual buttons.
  • The eRL Smart Lock System’s main goal is to provide you with the easiest way to generate and track Access Codes in the comfort of your own home or office. This means that no matter how far away you are from the rental property, you are still able to effectively control and manage access to your property. With a simple keypad lock, you are not able to do this, as you must always be physically present to set all Access Codes by the keypad.
  • Another one of the eRL Smart Lock System’s goals is to give you greater control over check-in/check-out times for your guests accessing your property, which increases security. Using a simple keypad lock is very limiting and creates many security risks as the Access Codes you set in the lock can last forever, therefore preventing you from controlling check-in/check-out times for guests or work times for personnel.

Compared with other similar systems, the eRL Smart Lock System has the following advantages.
1). The eRL Smart Locks are ANSI/BHMA certified, which means that they are made to the highest of quality to withstand tough weather conditions such as salt air environments that most seaside rental properties are situated near.
2). The eRL Smart Locks have a backlight keypad, which makes it easier to use under dark lighting. The keypad is also designed to withstand wear over time.
3). The PC/Web/Mobile version eRL Code Generation Programs are absolutely free to use. Unlike some other systems that charge monthly or service fees, the eRL Smart Lock System is a one-time purchase.
4). The eRL Smart Lock System can adjust to Daylight Savings Time automatically, which saves you the hassle of accounting for DST and having to physically go to your property to manually adjust for DST.
5). The eRL Smart Lock battery can last up to 3 years.
6). The eRL Smart Lock System allows you to easily disable an issued Access Code that is still valid. This is especially useful in cases for staff that resigns before their employment contract is up and still has access to your property. This allows you to have more control over who is allowed to enter your property.
7). The eRL Smart Lock System supports the Audit Trail feature. It also comes with the free 2-in-1 PC version and Web version eRL Code Generation Programs which are used not only to generate and manage all Access Codes, but also to view and print the Audit Trail Records.
8). The eRL Smart Lock System not only supports guest-specific Access Codes, but also supports personnel-specific Access Codes for easy control of staff access to your rental properties.
9). The eRL Smart Lock System can support group Access Codes, which is extremely convenient for multiple property managements. Your staff is able to use one group Access Code to access all properties classified under the same group.
10). The eRL Smart Lock System supports multiple eRL Code Generation Program accounts that operate at 3 privilege levels to allow you more control over access to your rental properties:
Level 1 account - can do everything in the eRL Code Generation Program.
Level 2 account - can only generate Access Codes in the eRL Code Generation Program.
Level 3 account - can only view generated Access Codes in the eRL Code Generation Program.
11). The eRL Smart Lock System supports the Web version eRL Code Generation Program API for any PMS system integration.

The eRL- BE365 deadbolt locks require manual locking. Otherwise, the door will stay unlocked even if closed.

These locks are made to be secure, as they are difficult to pick once the door is locked.

The eRL-FE595 latchbolt locks lock automatically once the door closes. This is especially useful for rental properties, as owners can make sure clients check out at the stated time remotely.

Latchbolt locks are easier to pick, but these risks can be mitigated by understanding the mechanism and installing correctly. You can learn how to do that here:

ANSI/ BHMA (Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association) Grading System is accredited by the America National Standards Institute (ANSI), a private non-profit organization that administers and coordinates the standardization to develop and maintain performance standards for builder's hardware. These standards have cycle, functional strength, security, dimension and finish requirements. If the products meet the standards, when tested by a nationally recognized testing laboratory the product may be listed in the “Directory of Certified Products,” a directory published by BHMA. ANSI/BHMA standards set forth different product grades for door hardware products. These product grades are defined by progressive levels of performance benchmarks in each applicable standard. The purpose of each grade is to help identify the quality, security, and durability of locksets through a series of operational and security tests.
What the grade means to you:

  • Grade 3 Good: Residential Security.
  • Grade 2 Better: Light Commercial and Heavy Residential (This is the eRL Smart Locks' grade).
  • Grade 1 Best: Heavy Commercial Use.

No. The eRL Smart Lock System is a one-time purchase.

Your purchase comes with the PC version of the eRL Code Generation Program software that only takes minutes to install on your own computer. You can generate Access Codes, no matter where you are, with or without Wi-Fi. Laptops, smart phones, tablets or other Internet enabled devices can also be used for code generation through accessing the Online Management Site, which is also free to use.

Absolutely not. This eRL Code Generation Program requires very little computer knowledge to use. While the PC version of the program only runs on the Windows Operation System, the Web version works on any operating system, such as iOS. These programs are very straightforward and simple to use.

Yes. Since the PC version of the eRL Code Generation Program operates without any network connection, you are able to generate Access Codes and grant access to your vacation & Airbnb rental properties at any time as long as you have a computer on hand. This means you can generate Access Codes from your home, office or even if you are on vacation. Even without your computer on hand, any Internet enabled device e.g. smartphones, tablets, public computers, can also access the Online Management Website to perform the same functions as the PC program.

The eRL Smart Lock System accommodates all of your rental property’s various needs. You are able to generate 4 different types of Access Codes for the following applications:

Please note: Group Access Codes are for staff/personnel use only. They are able to gain access to all eRL Smart Locks that are classified in the same group.

Guests/personnel are able to create their own Personalized Code to replace the 10-digit Access Code originally given to them. Upon successfully unlocking the door after entering their 10-digit Access Code, they can immediately create an easy-to-remember 3-6 digit Personalized Code, which they can use for the remainder of their stay/work.

Yes, you are able to manage properties up for long-term rental in addition to short-term rentals. You are able to control the time validity for up to 2 years with guest Access Codes, which is especially suitable for long-term rental needs. Here are some advantages of using the eRL smart lock system to manage your long-term rentals:

  • New tenants don’t need to worry about security issues associated with previous tenants whom might still have keys that could access their rental property.
  • You won’t have to go through the hassle of physically going back to your property and resetting a new code for every new tenant that rents your property.
  • This system saves you the stress of constantly having to remind your tenants to pay their monthly rent. Tenants will be required to pay their entire rent fee beforehand in order to receive an Access Code for their desired length of stay. Once their time is up, tenants will no longer be allowed into the property. Therefore, the eRL Smart Lock will serve as a reminder for your tenants to pay additional rent if they wish to stay longer.

This is near impossible because the 10-digit Access Code is generated from a total of 10 billion possible combinations, and the 3-6 digit Personalized Codes be created from over 1 million combinations. This makes guessing an Access Code or Personalized Code extremely difficult. Furthermore, a security feature that the eRL Smart Lock has is the “Inactive State” feature. The eRL Smart Lock will automatically go into an inactive state for 30 seconds after 3 wrong code tries. After the 30 seconds, the next wrong code try will prompt the eRL Smart Lock to enter a 30 second inactive state again.

When you are initially setting the date/time for your eRL Smart Lock, you must always set it up in standard time and NOT Daylight Savings Time! When you generate an Access Code, the eRL Code Generation Program will automatically adjust to Daylight Saving Time for that eRL Smart Lock based on your rental property’s geographical time zone. This means you no longer need to go back and forth to your rental properties to adjust to Daylight Saving Time for the eRL Smart Lock or worry about guests not entering your property if Daylight Saving Time happens to be in effect upon their arrival.

2. eRL System Setup

Absolutely not. The eRL Smart Lock is a do-it-yourself product that can easily be set up without the help of a professional, a special PDA, or any other device. It's as easy as 1-2-3 to set up:

1). Register your eRL Smart Lock with the eRL Code Generation Program.
2). Set the Master Code for the eRL Smart Lock - After registering your eRL Smart Lock with the eRL Code Generation Program, the eRL Code Generation Program will randomly generate a unique 6-digit private Master Code for the eRL Smart Lock. You will than need to set the Master Code into the eRL Smart Lock as following keypad command:
"private Master Code [SCHLAGE] 0 [SCHLAGE], enter the new private Master Code [SCHLAGE], re-enter the new private Master Code".
3). Set the date and time for the eRL Smart Lock as following keypad command:
"Enter your new private Master Code [SCHLAGE] 1 [SCHLAGE] enter the Year, Month, Day, Hour, and Minute in YY-MM-DD-HH-MM format".
You are all done! Your eRL Smart Lock is ready to go.

No. The Master Code is used by the program to encrypt access times to generate access codes, and the lock needs to use the same Master Code to decrypt the access code to get the allowed access time, so they MUST be same.

If your current lock location observes DST time, then please adjust one hour back according to your local DST time and use a 24-hour format when setting up lock time on your eRL Smart Lock. When generating access codes, there is no need for any time adjustment; simply input local DST time into your program.

Yes, it’s very easy to set up. You will only be required to register one eRL Smart Lock with the eRL Code Generation Program. You will need to set the same 6-digit Master Code as generated by the eRL Code Generation Program for both eRL Smart Locks. Afterwards, any Access Code generated by the eRL Code Generation Program can be used to unlock both eRL Smart Locks.

After follow the steps in Quick Setup Instructions eRL-BE365 & eRL-FE595 eRentalLock Quick Setup Instructions from Web program to setup each lock, please follow the following steps to create a new group and link each lock with the new group.
1. Login to the Code Generation Program.
2. Click Lock Management.
3. Click Multiple-Lock User.
4. Under the Group information table, click Add.
5. Fill in the information about the new group, and then click Submit.
6. Under the Group information table, click Show/Hide Group Master Code, and then note down the group Master Code.
7. Under the Lock information table, click Show/Hide Private Master Code.
8. Under the Lock information table, click one lock to select and note down the private Master Code for the selected lock, and then click Edit.
9. Select the new group you just created as the lock’s group, and then click Submit.
10. Enter keypad command as “6-digit private Master Code [SCHLAGE] 4 [SCHLAGE] 6-digit group Master Code [SCHLAGE] 6-digit group Master Code again”.
11. Repeat from step 6 to link each lock with this new group.
12. On Code Generation page, generate a group Access Code which is valid in current hour only to test each lock.

The eRL Smart Lock uses one 9V alkaline battery, which is commonly available at any store. One battery can last up to 3 years. After replacing a new battery, you do not need to re-program anything for the eRL Smart Lock if your old battery wasn't entirely drained or disconnected for more than 24 hours. If your old battery was entirely drained or disconnected for more than 24 hours, you will need to re-program the date and time for the eRL Smart Lock.

3. eRL System Daily Usage

The eRL Smart Lock allows for a total of 40 different Personalized Codes to replace 40 different original Access Codes at a time. Each 10-digit Access Code can be replaced by one 3-6 digit Personalized Code.

Every time a new Personalized Code is created, the old Personalized Code for that Access Code will be deleted automatically. Upon expiration, the Personalized Code will be automatically deleted along with the original 10-digit Access Code to make room for a new Personalized Code to be made by the next guest/personnel.

This way, you’ll never have to worry about running out of memory space for Personalized Code creations. The disabled Personalized Code can also be reused by a new guest or personnel one day after the original Access Code has expired.

No. If a user tries to create a Personalized Code that is the same as other user’s, the eRL Smart Lock will automatically reject this Personalized Code by playing a visible and audible warning (red light flashes) which signals that they need to create a different Personalized Code.

The eRL Smart Lock System is not only a remote access control system, but also a rental management system. This task is easy because the eRL Code Generation Program can keep track of every Access Code’s specific date/time information in real time. All you need to do is to click “Code Generation”, select your rental property address and the eRL Smart Lock name, then click “Checked Reserved”. You are than able to view all reservations for that property and immediately get back to your guests on whether they are able to book or not.

This is simple. Since the eRL Code Generation Program keeps track of all generated Access Codes in its database, all you need to do is to click “History Codes” in the program to find your guest’s Access Code, and quickly remind them again by phone or email.

The eRL Smart Lock retains the last 1,000 unlock/lock events. The Audit Trail feature allows you to know WHO used WHICH Access Code at WHAT date/time accessed your property. Thus, you will be able to check if housekeeper or maintenance people actually showed up to do their task at their designated times.
To get the Audit Trail from your eRL Smart Lock, you need to have the ATR-11 Audit Trail Reader:
1). Connect the Audit Trail Reader with your eRL Smart Lock and enter the download keypad command to retrieve the latest 1,000 Audit Trail records, which will be transferred from your eRL Smart Lock to the Audit Trail Reader.
2). Plug the Audit Trail Reader into your computer USB port and run the 2-in-1 PC/Web version of the eRL Code Generation Program to view or print out Audit Trail records.

This is easily done. All you need to do is to run the eRL Code Generation Program and look under the category “History Code” to find out your guest/staff’s Access Code.

  • On site to disable it yourself using Master Code – Entering keypad command as 6-digit Master Code [SCHLAGE] 2 [SCHLAGE], 10-digit Access Code you want to be disabled
  • Remotely disable it by a valid Access Code (ask your new guest/housekeeper to do it) – Entering keypad command as 10-digit valid Access Code [SCHLAGE], 10-digit Access Code you want to be disabled

After doing this, your guest/housekeeper’s Access Code and Personalized Code will forever be invalid.

4. eRL System Troubleshooting

No. The PC version of the program comes with a database backup/restore function that creates a backup file, if you periodically backup your database. Therefore, you will be able to recover all data even after your computer breaks down. If you chose to use the Online Management Website, we will periodically backup your database for you to prevent any data loss.

Please click Lock Management → Select the registered lock → Click Edit → Select Installed On as Guest Room Door.

Please follow following steps to reset the lock to factory default settings.
1. Disconnect battery.
2. Press the [SCHLAGE] button for 2 seconds (this is very important to discharge the lock).
3. Connect the battery. You’ll hear a long beep.
4. After the long beep stops, please immediately PRESS and HOLD the [SCHLAGE] button until you hear long beep, then immediately release the [SCHLAGE] button
5. After the green light turns off, your lock will be set to factory default settings. The Master Code will be 123456.
6. Please enter the keypad command as 123456 [SCHLAGE] 3 [SCHLAGE] to check if the lock can be unlocked.

7. If the default Master Code can unlock the lock, please enter the keypad command to reset your private Master Code as 123456 [SCHLAGE] 0 [SCHLAGE], your private Master Code [SCHLAGE], your private Master Code again.

8. Please enter the keypad command as private Master Code [SCHLAGE] 3 [SCHLAGE] to check if the lock can be unlocked.

Please check as follows.
1. Please login to your PC version software or web version program to note down the private Master Code displayed in the software/program.
2. Please enter the keypad command as private Master Code [SCHLAGE] 3 [SCHLAGE] to check if you can unlock the lock. If yes, go to step 3. If not, please look at FAQ 4.3 to reset your lock to factory settings, then go to step 3.
3. Please enter the keypad command to reset the date/time for the lock as private Master Code [SCHLAGE] 1 [SCHLAGE] YY-MM-DDHH-MM
Note:
1). The hour must be in 24-hour format.
2). You must use standard time, not DST time to set the lock time. E.g. if your local time is DST time 16:38, please set the lock time as 15:38.

4. Enter the test Access Code to test again.

This is caused by improper installation. Please watch the video below to fix the issue.

The small knob on the eRL-FE595 back cover is called as thumbturn.

The thumbturn can be enabled/disabled by using the keypad command private Master Code [SCHLAGE] 7 [SCHLAGE]

The factory default setting is “disable”. Entering the keypad command can enable it, and same keypad command again will disable it.

When it’s enabled, your guest can turn it vertically so that the door is always unlocked, and they don't need to enter the code to unlock the door. This way, your guest can stay at your property after check out time. So, we recommend owners to disable the thumbturn to control check out times.

Please check as follows.
1. Check if the Access Code is valid. If yes, go to step 2.
2. Please login to your PC version software or web version program to note down the private Master Code displayed in the software/program.
3. Please enter the keypad command as private Master Code [SCHLAGE] 3 [SCHLAGE] to check if you can get green light and unlock the lock. If yes, go to step 4. If not, please look at FAQ 4.3 to reset your lock to factory default settings.
4. Please enter the keypad command to reset the date/time for the lock as private Master Code [SCHLAGE] 1 [SCHLAGE] YY-MM-DDHH-MM
Note:
1). The hour must be in 24-hour format.
2). You must use standard time, not DST time to set the
lock time. E.g. if your local time is DST time 16:38,
please set the lock time as 15:38.

For security concerns, once the Access Code is generated, there is no way to delete it or edit the access time scheduled for this Access Code. You have to keep it in the database until it’s expired, and generate a new Access Code. However, you can disable the Access Code you generated incorrectly.
